With over 20 years of experience as a highly skilled direct support professional, Sarah is passionate about working with children and adults with exceptional needs, and their families.
Throughout her career, Sarah has dedicated herself to providing respite, educational, and behaviour support to individuals with complex needs. Her exceptional problem-solving skills and her ability to support individuals and families with educational and behaviour support have made her well-known in the field.
Sarah graduated from Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada, with a Social Services Worker Diploma in 2001. Since then, she has been employed full-time with the Peel District School Board, Ontario, Canada, for over 20 years, and presently as a behavioural educational assistant. She plays a crucial role in implementing effective behavior support strategies and providing one-to-one assistance to individuals with complex behavioural needs.
One of Sarah’s qualifications is her training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
Sarah is also trained in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI). This training equips her with the necessary tools to effectively manage crisis situations and ensure the safety of individuals involved.
Sarah is also trained in Restorative Practices. Restorative practices focus on building relationships, resolving conflicts, and promoting a positive climate.
Sarah has also worked as a Respite Care Professional with Community Living, North Halton, Ontario, Canada, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities in their weekend program. She subsequently started her own private Respite Care Professional Service, which she continues to operate today supporting caregivers needing a break.
What sets Sarah apart is her personal experience as a parent. Her eldest child was diagnosed with stage four cancer at just ten months old, and after a long and challenging journey, made a remarkable recovery, and is currently in his final year of an engineering and physics degree at the University of Ottawa.
This personal journey has fueled Sarah’s passion for specializing in providing support, coaching to parents and caregivers, as well as individual support to people with complex needs.
Sarah’s knowledge and compassionate nature make a profound impact on the lives of those she supports. She resides in Terra Cotta, Ontario, with her spouse, and they have two adult children, a teenager, and a beloved dog and cat.
Sarah has strong connections to Prince Edward Island, Canada and has spent all the summers of her childhood on the Island with her extended family, and continues to do so.
Sarah is an instructor in Holland College’s Customized Training hybrid Respite Care Professional Respite Microcredential Program and a guest speaker in Holland College’s blended Educational Assistant Certificate Program.
